Scalp first

Hair care starts at the scalp.

Your scalp is skin. Oil, sweat and styling products build up on it from one wash to the next. When it's clean and comfortable, your hair feels lighter and moves more easily. It's the way Korean head spas work: they start with the scalp. So does our bar.

How to wash with a bar

The Scalp Bar

A shampoo shaped for the scalp

A rounded triangle of solid herbal shampoo, the color of moss, with fine flecks of herbs. It sits in your palm and goes straight to the scalp.

  1. Made to glide

The soft corners slip between sections of wet hair and glide along the scalp, so the lather starts right where oil builds up.

  2. A creamy herbal lather

Coconut, olive and jojoba oils with shea butter make a soft, creamy lather that rinses clean.

  3. A cool, fresh feel

Peppermint brings a light cooling feel while you massage. Rosemary and ginger carry the scent, herbal with a warm edge.

  4. Nothing to spill

It's solid. No bottle, no cap, no leaks in your travel bag. Just a bar, and a dock to dry on.

Key ingredients

What goes into the bar

Plant oils and shea butter for the lather, herbs from East Asian hair care traditions, and essential oils you can smell. Here are six of them, in plain words.

  1. 01

    He shou wu (fo-ti) root

One of the dried herbs in the bar's blend, from East Asian herbal traditions. You see the herbs as fine darker flecks.

  2. 02

    Ginseng

Part of the same herbal blend, and a classic of hanbang, the Korean herbal beauty tradition.

  3. 03

    Rosemary

Fresh and herbal. It's most of what you smell when the bar meets warm water.

  4. 04

    Peppermint

The light cooling feel on your scalp while the lather is on.

  5. 05

    Ginger root

A warm, slightly spicy note that sits under the mint.

  6. 06

    Plant oils and shea butter

Coconut, olive and jojoba oils with shea butter: the base of the bar, for a creamy lather that rinses clean and leaves hair soft.

Washing with a bar

How to wash with a bar

If you've only ever used shampoo from a bottle, it takes one wash to get the hang of it.

  1. Gliding the Scalp Bar over a section of wet hair in the shower

    Glide

Wet your hair and scalp well. Glide the bar along your scalp, section by section, front to back, three or four passes.

  2. Massaging the lather into the scalp with the fingertips

    Massage

Put the bar down. Massage the lather into your scalp with your fingertips or the massager for about a minute, then work it through the lengths.

  3. Rinsing the lather out of the hair under the shower

    Rinse and condition

Rinse well, a little longer than you think. Condition the lengths, then rest the bar on its dock to dry.

Switching to a bar

Switching from a bottle

A few honest notes for your first washes with a bar.

  1. It can feel different at first

Your first washes may leave hair feeling squeaky, or a little heavy if your old products left a coating behind. Hair often takes a few washes to settle in. That's normal.

  2. Rinse longer than you think

A bar lathers close to the scalp. Rinse until your hair feels clean all the way through, then rinse a little more, especially if your hair is long or there is a lot of it.

  3. Condition, then keep it dry

Follow with a conditioner on the lengths and ends. Then give the bar a dry spot out of the water. On a dock it stays firm from one wash to the next.

Questions

Before you order

Anything else? Write to us from our contact page. We reply within 2 business days.

Can I use it every day?

You can. Wash as often as feels right for your hair. If your hair is very dry, curly or coily, you may prefer to wash less often and condition every time.

Does it suit all hair types, curly and coily included?

Yes, from straight to coily. The bar goes on the scalp, and the lengths only see the lather as you rinse. On curls and coils, glide it along your parts, massage with your fingertips and always follow with a conditioner on the lengths.

Can I use it if my hair is colored?

We haven't tested it on colored or bleached hair, so we can't tell you how your color will react. Try it on a small strand first and see how it looks and feels.

Do I need the Conditioner Bar too?

We'd always follow a shampoo with a conditioner on the lengths. Ours is a solid bar made for that, with shea butter and panthenol. Any conditioner you already like will do too.

Can I use it with my other scalp products?

Yes. The Scalp Bar is a shampoo: it washes, then rinses away. Use any leave-on scalp product after washing, the way its own label says.

Can I use it while pregnant or nursing?

The Scalp Bar and the Scalp Oil contain essential oils: rosemary, peppermint and ginger, plus tea tree in the bar. If you are pregnant or nursing, please ask your doctor before using them.

How long does a bar last?

It depends on the length of your hair and how often you wash. What matters most is keeping it dry: on the Bamboo Bar Dock, out of the shower stream, it stays firm instead of going soft in a puddle.

Will it help with hair loss?

No, and we'd rather say it plainly. OREUM products are cosmetics that clean, condition and care for the scalp and hair. They do not treat hair loss or any scalp or skin condition. If you notice sudden, patchy or heavy shedding, or have a scalp problem, please see a doctor or a board-certified dermatologist.

How long does delivery take, and will I pay duties?

We ship to all 50 US states and Washington, D.C. from our partner warehouse overseas. Each order is prepared in 1 to 3 business days, then takes 7 to 12 business days to arrive, so allow about 8 to 15 business days from order confirmation. Every order is tracked. Shipping is included in the price; there is no separate delivery charge. Import duties and customs fees are paid by us. If a carrier ever asks you for any, contact us and we will cover it in full. More on our shipping page.

Can I return something?

Unopened products in their original condition, and an unused Scalp Massager or Bamboo Bar Dock, can be returned within 30 days of delivery. For hygiene reasons, an opened or used Scalp Bar, Conditioner Bar or Scalp Oil cannot be returned. A defective, damaged or wrong item is replaced or refunded, even if opened. Write to mk.beramicedracan@gmail.com before sending anything back. You can also cancel an order at no charge until it ships. Everything is on our returns page.

Your next wash starts at the scalp.

A soft triangle of herbal shampoo on wet hair, a minute of massage, and the smell of rosemary in the steam. Start with the bar and add the rest when you like.
